2 o (508 x 327 mm). Etched pictorial title, and 294 etchings or aquatints on 156 plates by Saint-Non after Fragonard, Hubert Robert, Le Prince, Rembrandt and others (some occasional light spotting). Contemporary red morocco, gilt roll-tooled border, spine in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands tolled in gilt with musical instruments, artist's tools, gardening tools, gilt lettered green morocco lettering-piece, gilt edges. Provenance: Jacques Lafitte (1767-1844) French politician, banker and book collector (bookplate); 5th Earl of Rosebery (bookplate, sale Sotheby's London, 25 May 1995, lot 345); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1995.
FIRST EDITION, early issue without the "La veuve Lavoye" imprints. The work is one of the most complete compilations representing almost all of Saint-Non's engravings.
Comprising: title, 8 plates with 8 views of Rome after Le Prince and Robert; Varie vedute del gentile mulino dissegnate dal Principe [Le Prince]. 9 plates with 22 views with various subjects after Le Prince, Boucher and Fragonard; 2 plates with 10 views with various subjects; Fragmens choisis dans les Peintures et les tableaux les plus intéressants de l'Italie. Mostly after Robert, Fragonard and others; Première Suite: Rome, 12 plates with 24 subjects; Seconde Suite: Rome, 15 plates with 30 subjects; Quatrième suite: Venise, 19 plates with 38 subjects; Troisième suite: Bologne, 20 plates with 40 subjects; Deuxième suite: Naples, 15 plates with 30 subjects; Choix de quelque Peinture d'Herculanum Seconde suite de Naples, 10 plates with 20 subject; [Antiquities:] 18 numbered plates with 18 subjects; 5 plates with 10 subjects; 11 plates with 12 mostly Roman views; Le Docteur Francklin Couronné par la Liberté, one plate; 10 plates with 25 subjects after Rembrandt, Tiepolo and others;

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Recueil de Griffonis de vues, paysages, fragments antiques et sujets historiques. Paris, ca 1788. by Jean Claude Richard de Saint-Non was auctioned at Christies in New York in October 2013. The price achieved of USD 12,500.00 (€ 9,195.23) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 10,000.00 – 15,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Jean Claude Richard de Saint-Non - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Voyage Pittoresque Ou Description Des Royaumes De Naples Et De Sicile. Parigi: Avec Approbation Et Privilege Du Roi, [Clousier, 1781-86|AID211730], which sold at auction in November 2010 for EUR 34,350.00.
