6 suites bound in one volume, 4 o (268 x 195 mm). 200 aquatint plates (6 titles and 184 plates and an additional suite of 10 plates on Herculameum) by Saint-Non after Fragonard and Roberts. Contemporary straight-grained red morocco gilt, smooth spine gilt. Provenance: John Peachey, Sussex (bookplate dated 1782); West Dean Library, Sussex (library label); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1984.
FIRST EDITION of this much admired work with early aquatint illustrations. The work comprises: Rome (2 parts), Bologna (one part), Venice (one part), Naples (2 parts) and a series of 10 additional plates on Herculaneum. It illustrates works of Raphael, Michelangelo, Veronese, and others. See Cohen-De Ricci 931. A SUPERB SET.
