RAO ZONGYI (1917-2018) Calligraphy in Seal Script Scroll, mounted for framing, ink on gold-flecked red paper 68.5 x 33 cm. (27 x 13 in.) Inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artist Dedicated to Master of Wenhuage NOTE: This lot is accompanied by three unsigned works by the artist. Each measures approximately 33.5 x 66.5 cm. (13 1 ⁄ 4 x 26 1 ⁄ 8 in.).
Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
When the work Calligraphy in Seal Script by Rao Zongyi was auctioned at Christies in Hong Kong in December this year, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - HKD 50,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than four times as high at HKD 214,200.00 (€ 24,785.39). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Rao Zongyi achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Auspicious Flowers and Fruits in October 2021 with an auction result of HKD 8,040,000.00 (€ 894,338.64).
Kunstwerk zum Vierfachen des oberen Schätzpreises versteigert
Als die Arbeit Calligraphy in Seal Script von Rao Zongyi im Dezember diesen Jahres bei Christies in Hong Kong versteigert wurde, übertraf das Ergebnis die Erwartungen um ein Vielfaches. Der obere Schätzpreis war mit – rückwirkend betrachtet recht bescheidenen – HKD 50.000,00 angesetzt, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis hingegen war mit HKD 214.200,00 (€ 24.785,39) mehr als viermal so hoch. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Rao Zongyi erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Auspicious Flowers and Fruits im Oktober 2021 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von HKD 8.040.000,00 (€ 894.338,64).
