Auction result well in line with expectations
In April 2004 Christies in London held the auction Travel and Natural History, which included the work Sparrow Hawk, Female; Red Legged Hobby; Kestril, Male; Ash Coloured Harrier Male; Black Guillemot (Summer Plumage, Winter Plumage); Eared Grebe, Young; Red Breasted Merganser, Female; And Bimaclated Teal, Female by Prideaux John Selby. The price achieved of GBP 657.25 (€ 590.49) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 600.00 – 800.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Prideaux John Selby achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Illustrations of British Ornithology. Text volumes: Edinburgh, London and Dublin: W.H. Lizars; Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman; W. Curry Jun. & Co., 1833. Plate volumes: Edinburgh and London: Archibald Constable & Co.; Hurst, Robinson & Co. in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 29,375
Text volumes: Edinburgh, London and Dublin: W.H.
