A top price for Pirro Ligorio
When the work Two princes of the House of Guelph: Duke William VII and Duke Philip VI by Pirro Ligorio was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2004, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 7,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at USD 22,705.00 (€ 18,234.02). This high result makes Two princes of the House of Guelph: Duke William VII and Duke Philip VI the most expensive artwork by Pirro Ligorio that we have observed at auctions so far.
