Artwork auctioned at five times the upper estimate price
When the work Five Portrait Medallions Of French Painters Including Alfred Johannot, Antoine-Jean Gros, Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois, François Gérard, And Léon Cogniet by Pierre-Jean David d'Angers was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in April 2021, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 1,500.00 but the actual price achieved was more than five times as high at USD 8,190.00 (€ 6,807.98). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Pierre-Jean David d'Angers achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Buste En Marbre Blanc En Hermès Représentant Marie-Joseph-Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis De La Fayette (1757-1834) in June 2010 with an auction result of EUR 1,521,000.00.
