In the The National Geographic Collection: The Art of Exploration auction, the work Great Buddha, 175 Feet High, Bamian, Afghanistan, 1931 sold for USD 1,750.00 (€ 1,327.17) - well above the upper estimate of USD 800.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Maynard Owen Williams; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Citroen-Haardt Trans-Asiatic Expedition, Herat, Afghanistan, May 21, 1931 sold at auction in December 2012 with the realized price of USD 2,750.00 (€ 2,085.55).
