This artwork by Marcus Stone achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in February 2003. In the THE FORBES COLLECTION OF VICTORIAN PICTURES AND WORKS OF ART auction, the work Study for 'My Lady is a Widow and Childless' sold for GBP 65,725.00 (€ 95,956.43) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 30,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Marcus Stone; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot My Lady is a Widow and Childless 'Tis better to be lowly born, and range with humble livers in content, than to be perk'd up in a glistering grief, and wear a golden sorrow' William Shakespeare, The Life of King Henry VIII, act II, scene, 3. sold at auction in February 2003 with the realized price of GBP 116,650.00 (€ 170,305.32).
