Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A view of Niagara Falls, showing the Bridal Veil Falls, Goat Island and Horseshoe Falls, taken from Luna Island by Major Charles Frederick Gibson was sold in the Topographical Pictures auction at Christies in London in December 2016. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 4,375.00 (€ 5,115.08) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Major Charles Frederick Gibson - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Seven views of Halifax, Nova Scotia, which sold at auction in December 2016 for GBP 13,125.00 (€ 15,345.25).
