Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Nelson arriving at St. John's Harbour, Antigua, 12 June 1805 in the pursuance of Villeneuve shewing the Victory and the Brig Curieux with dispatches for England by Louis Dodd was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2001, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 2,000.00 – 4,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,762.50 (€ 2,954.87). Admittedly, works by Louis Dodd have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Charleston built frigate John Adams with the American fleet on the Guadeloupe station under Commodore Truxtun at Basseterre, St. Christoper's and Nevis, Leeward Islands, West Indies in May 2000 with an auction result of GBP 9,987.50 (€ 16,026.25).
