KITAGAWA UTAMARO (1753-1806)
Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1802-1803
Two oban tate-e bijinga prints: the first of cherry blossom from the series Edo no hana: Musume joruri (The Flowers of Edo: Girl Ballad Singers) depicting a seated beauty reciting joruri (ballad drama) whilst playing the shamisen, published by Yamaguchiya Chuemon, circa 1803, 37.5cm x 26.2cm (14¾in x 10 6/16in); the second depicting a mother about to breastfeed her infant son from the series Furyu kodakara awase (Fashionable Comparisons of Precious Children), published by Izumiya Ichibei, circa 1802, 36.7cm x 24.5cm (14 7/16in x 9 5/8in); both signed Utamaro hitsu; mounted on card. Auction result misses estimated price range
In May this year a collector was able to acquire the work Unknown by Kitagawa Utamaro for GBP 512.00 (€ 595.72). This price was achieved in the auction From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries at Bonhams in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 800.00 – 1,000.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Kitagawa Utamaro achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work L'amour évident (Arawaruru koi), portrait en buste (okubi-e) d'une jeune femme s'arrangeant une épingle à cheveux sur fond micacé, de la série Anthologie de poèmes: la section de l'amour, (Kasen koi no bu in May 2018 with an auction result of EUR 381,000.00.
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Im Mai diesen Jahres konnte ein Sammler die Arbeit Unknown von Kitagawa Utamaro für GBP 512,00 (€ 595,72) erwerben. Dieser Preis wurde in der Auktion From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries bei Bonhams in London erzielt und lag noch unterhalb der von dem Auktionshaus angesetzten Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 800,00 – 1.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Kitagawa Utamaro erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit L'amour évident (Arawaruru koi), portrait en buste (okubi-e) d'une jeune femme s'arrangeant une épingle à cheveux sur fond micacé, de la série Anthologie de poèmes: la section de l'amour, (Kasen koi no bu im Mai 2018 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von EUR 381.000,00.
