This artwork by Julie Mehretu achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in Hong Kong in April 2019. In the Contemporary Art Evening Sale auction, the work Black Ground (Deep Light) sold for HKD 44,209,000.00 (€ 5,032,271.67) - well above the upper estimate of HKD 20,000,000.00. This high result makes Black Ground (Deep Light) the most expensive artwork by Julie Mehretu that we have observed at auctions so far.
