Selleny was appointed artist to the voyage of the Austrian frigate Novara which circumnavigated the world between 1857 and 1859. He is thought to have produced in the region of two thousand sketches during the voyage, a selection of which were used to illustrate Scherzer's Reise der Östereichischen Fregatte Novara um die Erde, in den Jahren 1857, 1858, 1859, unter den Befehlen des Commodore B. von Wüllersdorf-Urbair, Vienna, 1861-62 (and its companion edition in English). Auction result well in line with expectations
In November 2020 Christies in London held the auction Topographical Pictures, including China Trade Paintings. ARCTIC · AMERICAS · AFRICA · ASIA · AUSTRALASIA · ANTARCTICA, which included the work Shipping On The Pasig River At Manila by Josef Selleny. The price achieved of GBP 4,750.00 (€ 5,302.60) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Josef Selleny achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Australischer Wald. Character des Illawara Gebietes. [Australian forest in the Illawarra District|AID652060] in September 2011 with an auction result of GBP 157,250.00 (€ 182,680.79).

Der dabei erzielte Preis von GBP 4.750,00 (€ 5.302,60) lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit GBP 4.000,00 – 6.000,00 angegeben worden. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Josef Selleny erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Australischer Wald.
