Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Joos van Cleve achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in July 2008. In the Old Master Paintings Evening Sale auction, the work Portrait Of A Man, Half Length, In A Black Cap And A Fur-Trimmed Coat sold for GBP 713,250.00 (€ 906,192.15) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 300,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Joos van Cleve; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Madonna Of The Cherries sold at auction in October last year with the realized price of USD 1,071,000.00 (€ 1,078,115.56).
