Collected, Engrave and Faithfully Painted after Nature, 26 pages letterpress watermarked J Whatman or J Whatman 1821, 26 finely hand-coloured etching plates by and after John Lewin including 9 watermarked J Whatman 1825, (frontispiece faintly offset onto title, some offsetting onto facing text, minor offsetting on some plates), publisher's red half roan, grey boards, original printed label on upper cover, spine lettered in gilt Lewin's Birds, head and foot of spine repaired, extremities rubbed, corners worn), small folio (14.5 x 10.5 in, 365 x 267 mm), G. Schulze for J. H. Bohte, London 1822 [i.e. not before 1825]
THIRD (AND FIRST COMPLETE) EDITION, FIRST ISSUE WITH THE 1822 TITLE PAGE. EARLIER STATES OF PLATES 3 AND 19-26 WITHOUT PLATE NUMBERS. CONTAINING EIGHT PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED PLATES (7, 19-25) THAT HAD BEEN ETCHED BY LEWIN BEFORE HIS DEATH.

Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
The work A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales by John William Lewin was sold in the AUSTRALIAN, INTERNATIONAL & CONTEMPORARY PAINTINGS auction at Christies in Sydney in August 2003. Here, the upper estimate of AUD 30,000.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for AUD 30,550.00 (€ 18,047.47). Other works by John William Lewin have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of GBP 27,720.00 (€ 32,609.94) in May last year for the work A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales, 1838.
