Description
North Pacific Seabirds
John James Audubon, 1838
AUDUBON, John James (1785-1851), after. – HAVELL, Robert (1793-1878).
Black-throated Guillemot; Nobbed-billed Auk; Curled-Crested Auk; Horned-billed Guillemot (Plate CCCCII)
[Four species]
Variant 1. The models for these birds were borrowed by Audubon from the Museum of the Zoological Society of London, suggesting they were painted by Audubon in 1838 or possibly 1837. The modern names for these species are the Ancient Murrelet, the Least Auklet, the Crested Auklet, and the Rhinoceros Auk.
Engraving with hand-coloring, etching, and aquatint, dated 1838, on watermarked J Whatman paper dated 1837, with margins. Plate size 472 x 702 mm (639 x 967 mm sheet). (Some light creasing and minor handling marks.) Matted and framed.

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work North Pacific Seabirds by John James Audubon was sold in the The Private Collection of William S. Reese: Part Two auction at Christies in New York in May this year. The price achieved of USD 4,032 (€ 3,757) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been given by the auction house as USD 3,000 - 5,000. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John James Audubon achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work in June 2018 with an auction result of USD 9,650,000 (€ 8,264,109).
