Auction result misses estimated price range
In May 2003 a collector was able to acquire the work French and British men-o'war in a swell after dark by Johann van der Hagen for GBP 5,875.00 (€ 8,185.35). This price was achieved in the auction Maritime at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Johann van der Hagen - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Double portrait of a young boy and girl, the boy, full-length, in a gold-embroidered blue jacket with red wrap, gesturing towards a man-o-war flying the white ensign, the girl, seated full-length, in a gold dress and green wrap, a bird perched on her, which sold at auction in March 2001 for GBP 17,625.00 (€ 28,439.
