Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work An Architectural Capriccio With Ancient Ruins, A Triumphal Arch And A Haut-Relief Sculpture, With The Story Of Mercury And Argus by Jean Lemaire was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2012, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 80,000.00 – 120,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 79,250.00 (€ 97,737.26). Other works by Jean Lemaire have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in April 2000 by the work Theseus recovering his father's sword at GBP 78,550.00 (€ 134,474.42).
