Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Jakob Philipp Hackert achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in December 2019. In the Old Masters Day Sale auction, the work Italianate Landscape With Mercury, Argus And Io; Italianate Landscape With Banditti Conversing sold for GBP 118,750.00 (€ 140,348.60) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 50,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Jakob Philipp Hackert - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The Port of Salerno from Vietri, with herdsmen and other figures in the foreground, with the Castello di Arechi beyond and shipping vessels in the bay, which sold at auction in July 2015 for GBP 338,500.00 (€ 479,879.31).
