The endangered Puerto Rican Amazon is presently found only in Puerto Rico, but up until 1899 it was also found on nearby Culebra Island, and earlier on Vieques and Mona Islands. In the 1950's, the population was estimated at 200 birds; and, in 1975, reached an all time low of 13 birds. Currently, there are about 24 to 26 parrots in the wild, including four breeding pairs, and 56 in captivity at the Luquillo Aviary. [With:]

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Puerto Rican Amazon, young male (Plate no. 108, Perruche à Face Rouge, Amazona vittata Sheet size 190 x 12½ inches 503 x 317mm.) by Jacques Barraband was auctioned at Christies in London in June 2001. The price achieved of GBP 3,525.00 (€ 5,855.73) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jacques Barraband achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Troisième variété du perroquet cendré - The Grey Parrot - Psittacus erithacus. in June 2000 with an auction result of GBP 91,750.00 (€ 145,435.04).
