Commentaire : Hubert-François Bourguignon d'Anville, dit Gravelot, eut une très importante activité d'illustrateur, en France comme à Londres où il vécut une dizaine d'années, imaginant les personnages et les scènes des oeuvres de Shakespeare, de Voltaire, d'Ovide, du Tasse et de nombreux autres auteurs. Notre dessin est préparatoire à l'un de ces travaux.

This artwork by Hubert-François Gravelot achieved an unexpectedly high price at Artcurial in March 2016. In the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings and Drawings auction, the work Le Contrat De Mariage sold for EUR 2,210.00 - well above the upper estimate of EUR 800.00. Admittedly, works by Hubert-François Gravelot have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A Collection Of 79 Designs For Bookplates, Metalwork, Prints And Book Illustrations in July 2001 with an auction result of GBP 7,637.50 (€ 12,437.12).

Dieses Kunstwerk von Hubert-François Gravelot erzielte im März 2016 bei Artcurial einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Old Master & 19th Century Paintings and Drawings wurde die Arbeit Le Contrat De Mariage für EUR 2.210,00 versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von EUR 800,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Hubert-François Gravelot auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit A Collection Of 79 Designs For Bookplates, Metalwork, Prints And Book Illustrations im Juli 2001 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 7.637,50 (€ 12.437,12).
