Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work A gentleman, standing in a street with buildings beyond, in black coat with gold buttons, yellow waistcoat and frilled cravat, forward combed dark hair by Henri L'Evêque was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2004, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 1,200.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 4,541.00 (€ 6,813.17). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Henri L'Evêque; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot View Of The Forum With The Arch Of Septimus Severus sold at auction in July 2012 with the realized price of GBP 9,375.00 (€ 11,941.23).
