Artwork auctioned at 13 times the upper estimate price
When the work An Italianate Wooded River Landscape With Bathers, Peasants And Ruins; And An Italianate River Landscape With Travelers, Revelers And A Waterfall by George Barret was auctioned at Christies in New York in June 2013, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 20,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than 13 times as high at USD 267,750.00 (€ 205,803.23). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by George Barret - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A wooded river landscape with a man fishing in the foreground, a shepherd playing a flute beside a flock of sheep and a town beyond; and A wooded river landscape with fishermen in a boat, a ruined building beyond and figures crossing a bridge, which sold at auction in December 2010 for GBP 481,250.00 (€ 558,248.55).
