In May 2000 Christies in New York held the auction Old Master Paintings from the Lagerfeld Collection, which included the work Portrait of Prince Friedrich-Franz I zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1756-1785), small full-length, in an embroidered green suit, at his studies by Georg David Matthieu. The »bidding war« ended at USD 64,625.00 (€ 69,280.66), 29% above the upper estimate. With this result, Portrait of Prince Friedrich-Franz I zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1756-1785), small full-length, in an embroidered green suit, at his studies is even the most expensive work of art by Georg David Matthieu that we have observed at auctions so far.
