Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Naples, A View Of The Riviera Di Chiaia From The Strada Di Posillipo, With Vesuvius Smoking Beyond; Naples, A View Of The Bay Towards The Castel Sant'Elmo by Gaspar Butler was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2017, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 150,000.00 – 200,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 125,000.00 (€ 140,66 Other works by Gaspar Butler have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in July 2011 by the work View of Naples with the Riviera di Chiaia from the strada di Posillipo, with Vesuvius beyond at GBP 229,250.00 (€ 263,098.67).
