Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Donnybrook Fair; A Group Of Tents On A Bare Hillside With Peasants Gathered Round The Stalls, A Family Of Gipsies Resting In The Foreground by Francis Wheatley was auctioned at Sothebys in London in September 2009, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 1,200.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 4,375.00 (€ 4,785.89). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francis Wheatley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Equestrian portrait of Sir Henry Pigot (1750-1840) in December 2000 with an auction result of USD 369,000.00 (€ 393,054.96).
