Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Running Script Calligraphy by Dong Qichang was auctioned at Christies in Hong Kong in December last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of HKD 500,000.00 – 600,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for HKD 420,000.00 (€ 50,330.90). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Dong Qichang achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Calligraphy In Regular And Running Script After The Old Masters in October 2021 with an auction result of HKD 57,750,000.00 (€ 6,423,887.64).
