Auction result well in line with expectations
In October 2002 Christies in London held the auction British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings, which included the work A folio of drawings, the majority landscape, topographical and figurative subjects including: Horse Chestnuts, Brampton park, Huntingdon; Brampton Park; Cows grazing by a tree, Brampton; Woodland landscape; Brampton, Huntingdon; Dunwich church ruins, by Cornelius Varley. The price achieved of GBP 2,820.00 (€ 4,460.74) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 2,500.00 – 3,500.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Cornelius Varley - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Hampstead Heath, which sold at auction in July 2010 for GBP 10,625.00 (€ 12,775.37).
