Watercolour and bodycolour on ivory, chased gold mount with blue enamel border, set in the lid of a rectangular tortoiseshell box, Pierre André Montauban, 1798-1809;
the lid interior engraved: Portrait / de Monseigneur / le Comte de Beaujolais, / dans sans enfance.
The box: 7.5 by 5.5 cm., 2 ¾ by 3 in.; The miniature: 5.1 by 3.3 cm., 2⅛ by 1⅜ in.

This artwork by Charles Hénard achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in May 2020. In the Old Masters including Portrait Miniatures from the Pohl-Ströher Collection auction, the work Portrait Of Louis-Charles D'Orléans, Count Of Beaujolais (1779-1808), Dressed As A Winemaker, Circa 1790 sold for GBP 6,250.00 (€ 6,938.19) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 3,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Charles Hénard; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A young lady, in white dress with lace trim with garland of pink flowers draped over her right shoulder and another tied around her right arm at the elbow, blue ribbon tied with a bow at her right shoulder, loose powdered hair dressed 'à la conseill sold at auction in June 2008 with the realized price of GBP 7,500.00 (€ 9,480.25).
