Auction result well in line with expectations
In June 2003 Christies in London held the auction IMPORTANT GOLD BOXES,OBJECTS OF VERTU & PORTRAIT MINIATURES, which included the work Marquis de Belbeuf (1791-1872) and his wife Claudine (1799-1846 or 1802-1842); he, facing right in ermine-bordered red cloak, black jacket and white bands; she, facing left in red velvet dress with pleated bodice, scalloped lace-bordered underdress, by Charles Antoine Berny d'Ouville. The price achieved of GBP 1,015.75 (€ 1,459.69) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 800.00 – 1,200.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Charles Antoine Berny d'Ouville - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A young gentleman, called the miniaturist Gra..., in blue velvet coat, white waistcoat, shirt and knotted cravat, which sold at auction in June 2009 for GBP 2,750.00 (€ 3,227.03).
