Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait of Charles MacDonnell (1736-1773), half-length, in van Dyck costume, gesturing to papers on a stone ledge by Anton Raphael Mengs was sold in the Old Master & British Paintings auction at Christies in London in April 2011. It changed hands for a price of GBP 11,875.00 (€ 13,373.30) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 8,000.00 – 12,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Anton Raphael Mengs achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle in July last year with an auction result of GBP 475,000.00 (€ 567,234.37).
Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle im Juli letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 475.000,00 (€ 567.234,37).
