The work Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in a black coat with a van Dyck collar: a study by Anton Raphael Mengs was sold in the OLD MASTER PICTURES auction at Christies in London in December 2001. It achieved a price of GBP 11,515.00 (€ 18,813.91), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 65%. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Anton Raphael Mengs achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle in July last year with an auction result of GBP 475,000.00 (€ 567,234.37).

Oberer Schätzpreis um 65 % übertroffen

Die Arbeit Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in a black coat with a van Dyck collar: a study von Anton Raphael Mengs wurde im Dezember 2001 in der Auktion OLD MASTER PICTURES bei Christies in London versteigert. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von GBP 11.515,00 (€ 18.813,91) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 65%. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Anton Raphael Mengs erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle im Juli letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 475.000,00 (€ 567.234,37).
