signed and dated 'Alfred Fripp 1843' (lower right) and further signed, inscribed and numbered 'Alfred D.Fripp The Bather/No 3' and further inscribed '"The parted flood/Its lovely guest with closing waves received/and every beauty softening, every grace/Flushing a new, a mellow lustre shed;/as shine the lily thro the crystal mild,/Or as the rose amid the morning dust,/Fresh from Aurora's hand, more worthy flows."/Thomson.' (on an old label attached to the backboard)

The work The bather by Alfred Downing Fripp was sold in the BRITISH AND CONTINENTAL WATERCOLOURS AND DRAWINGS auction at Christies in London in May 2001. It achieved a price of GBP 1,292.50 (€ 2,166.91), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 62%. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Alfred Downing Fripp; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Pompeii, Italy sold at auction in November 2003 with the realized price of GBP 2,868.00 (€ 4,117.06).

Die Arbeit The bather von Alfred Downing Fripp wurde im Mai 2001 in der Auktion BRITISH AND CONTINENTAL WATERCOLOURS AND DRAWINGS bei Christies in London versteigert. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von GBP 1.292,50 (€ 2.166,91) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 62%. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Alfred Downing Fripp; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit Pompeii, Italy im November 2003 mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 2.868,00 (€ 4.117,06).
