Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of Richard Cobden, M.P. (1804-1865), half-length, in a black coat and a grey waistcoat, in a feigned oval by Alexandre Marie Colin was auctioned at Christies in London in September 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 2,250.00 (€ 2,613.87). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Alexandre Marie Colin achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Le Giaour in October 2001 with an auction result of USD 534,000.00 (€ 593,795.17).
