The artist Richard Prince

  • Contemporary US artist who is considered a pioneer of appropriation art.
  • His work sparked heated debates about copyright and intellectual property in the art scene.
  • The series »Cowboys« (1980-1992) is one of his best-known works.

Born on 6 August 1949 in what was then the Panama Canal Zone, Richard Prince is a painter and photographer whose work is classified as Appropriation Art. After not completing his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, Prince moved to New York City in 1973 and took a job at the magazine publisher Time Inc. Here he became involved with media observation and concept art, two practices that influenced his art. In addition, his painting technique was influenced by Willem de Kooning, an important representative of abstract expressionism and a pioneer of action painting. With similarities to pieces by Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, among others, Prince's style was reminiscent of Pop Art, but through his photographing and reusing, he became a pioneer and one of the main representatives of appropriation art in the 1980s.

Prince often photographed images from advertising and entertainment, for example, with altered cropping and varied their graininess or colour, and then republished them. He himself calls this form of appropriation »rephotographing«. His best-known work is the series called Cowboys, which is based on the advertising campaign of the cigarette brand Marlboro and shows photographed excerpts of their advertising images (originally produced by the photographer Hannes Schmid). In 1986 he began his Jokes series, in which he dealt with the sexual fantasies and sexual frustration of the white middle class in the USA. To this end, he wrote jokes on a monochrome-primed canvas and often added drawings, paintings or cartoons.

With his appropriation art, Prince repeatedly pushed legal boundaries and sparked debates about copyright, intellectual property and theft. It was not only his Cowboys series that drew repeated criticism for these reasons. In 2015, he faced a wave of indignation when he photographed various Instagram pictures, enlarged them and sold them for 90,000 US dollars each without asking the owners for permission or giving them a share of the profits. Nevertheless, his work is coveted by art lovers: at an auction at Sotheby's in New York in November 2007, a picture from his Cowboys series sold for 3.4 million US dollars, making it the highest-priced single photograph ever sold.

In 1988, Prince's artwork was part of the Venice Biennale and in 1992 of documenta 9. His art has also been included in various solo exhibitions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) in 1992, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (California) in 1993, the Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo) in 2006 and Kunsthaus Bregenz (Austria) in 2014. In addition, his work is part of the public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Collection (Boston), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Texas) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Richard Prince lives and works in New York.

Richard Prince lebt und arbeitet in New York.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art: Richard Prince Solo Show

Richard Prince conjured great art out of everyday banalities - he provided normality with special effects and thus became a pioneer of Appropriation Art. Through charm, wit, and a pinch of restraint, he still distinguishes himself from contemporaries such as Jeff Koons. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is bringing Prince a little closer to its audience beginning November 17. The solo show entices with »seductive and strange« transformations.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art: Richard-Prince-Soloschau
