The artist Richard Diebenkorn

  • 20th century American painter known for his abstract-figurative mix of styles.
  • His Santa Monica Ocean Park series is considered his best-known work.
  • He served as a juror for the Guggenheim Foundation from 1979 to 1988.

Influential painter Richard Diebenkorn is known today as much for his signature abstract expressionist works as for his figurative works. Born in 1922 in Portland, Oregon, and raised in San Francisco, Diebenkorn discovered his artistic talent at an early age. He studied at Stanford University in the 1940s and became interested in the ultra-realism of Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Diebenkorn's artistic career can be divided into several phases. In the 1950s, he became known as an abstract expressionist painter, strongly influenced by artists such as Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. His work from this period is characterized by bold colors, gestural brushwork, and a sense of spontaneity.

Diebenkorn lived in Berkeley from 1955 to 1966, which is why two of his four creative periods relate to the city: the Berkeley Abstraction and Berkeley Figurative years. In the mid-1950s, Diebenkorn returned to figurative painting, mixing landscapes with his earlier, more abstract form, as he would do again later. Beginning in 1966, Diebenkorn turned to what is now known as the Ocean Park series of paintings, which, despite their quasi-geometric abstraction, evoke the landscape and hazy light of Southern California.

The Ocean Park paintings are often views of his studio in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica, where he lived until 1988. The series is now among Diebenkorn's most important works, demonstrating his trained eye for color, space, and composition. In the 1980s, while still in Santa Monica, Diebenkorn returned to figurative painting, incorporating abstract elements. In his later work, he combined these representational aspects with the expressive qualities of his long abstract phase to create a unique blend of styles.

Throughout his career, the art world honored Diebenkorn with numerous awards and exhibitions. He represented the United States at the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978 and served as a juror for the Guggenheim Foundation from 1979 to 1983. His work is in the collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Richard Diebenkorn died in Berkeley on March 30, 1993, just three weeks shy of his 71st birthday. His ability to combine abstract and figurative elements continues to inspire and fascinate the art world today.
