The artist Lucio Fontana

  • Italian avant-garde artist who devised new spatial concepts for art.
  • His »Tagli«, canvas cuts, are still world famous today.
  • With his avant-garde experimentation, he influenced subsequent art movements.

The Italian-born avant-garde artist Lucio Fontana was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1899. He is still known today for his abstract sectional paintings as well as his Concetto Spaziale (spatial concepts). With his experimental innovations, he had a far-reaching influence on many of his contemporaries. Trained as a graduate engineer, Fontana began his artistic career in the 1920s in his father's sculpture studio and eventually moved to his parents' native Italy.

As early as 1930, Fontana was involved in the Venice Biennale. In 1948 he founded the artists' group Movimento Spaziale (Spatial Art), for which he wrote two manifestos. His own movement was based on Futurism's guiding idea of merging painting, sculpture, music and poetry. The idea followed Fontana's passion: the search for a new concept of space in art. He perforated two-dimensional, monochrome paintings for the first time, illustrating that the work should be understood as a freely unfolding continuum.

In 1949 followed the first Buchi (Holes), and finally in 1950 the Pietre, which also contained pieces of glass. Then, in the late 1950s, the avant-gardist turned to his characteristic Tagli (cuts). Literally, he used knives to cut thin slits into the canvas - allowing it to become spatial by revealing the gauze-covered plane behind the cuts. At the same time, Fontana provoked the dissolution of basic conditions in traditional painting with the destroyed picture support. He also incorporated color into the concept: red, blue and green intensified the effect of the cuts.

Later Fontana's oeuvre was joined by installations with neon light (e.g. Cube di Luce, 1959/1960), which from then on also made him a light artist and a pioneer of modern Environments. His constant reduction to the abstract and his ongoing desire to reinvent art and bring it into harmony with science is said to have inspired movements and groups such as ZERO, Nouveau Réalisme, and Arte Povera. Lucio Fontana died in 1968 in Comabbio near Varese, Italy, at the age of 69. His works were shown a total of three times at the documenta in Kassel, twice at the Venice Biennale and once at the São Paulo Biennale.
