The artist James Rosenquist

  • US pop artist from the New York creative circle of the 1960s.
  • His oversized painting »F-111« made him world famous.
  • His work as a commercial artist inspired him to create Pop Art.

James Rosenquist was a representative of American Pop Art, best known for his large-scale, sometimes collage-like paintings. Born in 1933 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he was able to attend the Minneapolis School of Art in 1948 thanks to a short-term scholarship. Four years later he completed his studies in Minnesota and finally in New York in 1956. He was able to do so thanks to a scholarship from the Art Students League. There he met important contemporaries such as Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin and Robert Rauschenberg.

Arriving in New York with his studies in his pocket, Rosenquist first worked as a commercial artist, an experience that was reflected in his artistic work. In typical Pop Art fashion, he used the imagery of advertising and mass media, arranging images from consumer culture, popular media, and various everyday objects into large-scale, vivid, or even surreal paintings. The artist achieved international fame with his most prominent work to date, F-111 (1964-65), a 59-panel, full-size depiction of an F-111 fighter plane. In the style of Pop Art, the military motif is juxtaposed with seemingly incongruous objects such as spaghetti, hair dryers, light bulbs, and even a mushroom cloud.

Rosenquist created it for his first solo exhibition at New York's Leo Castelli Gallery - three meters high and 26 meters wide, he had it custom-made to fit the four walls it spanned. He had researched photos and information about the fighter jet in advance to ensure a realistic depiction.

Like other followers of American Pop Art, Rosenquist fixated on everyday objects. In his paintings, some of the objects often appear disproportionate or torn, especially in relation to the other motifs he chose - he literally put detergent packaging or car trailers in a whole new light. In addition to paintings, his oeuvre includes a large number of prints, drawings, and collages.

His print Time Dust (1992), for example, is now considered the largest print in the world (2 by 11 meters). His first retrospective was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1972, and Rosenquist continued to produce large-scale commissions for museums and other exhibition venues well into his old age. He died in New York City in 2017 at the age of 83.
