For her first institutional solo show in Switzerland, Sandra Mujinga (*1989) has created a new installation that achieves the usual frightening effect with monumental sculptures and atmospheric sound. Inspired by science fiction, Mujinga's ghostly sculptures deal with central human themes such as the use of violence and racism and the survival strategies humans have developed. In Time as a Shield, an exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, she combines body perceptions with current technologies in the age of surveillance. Invisible bodies and invisible presences are a guiding principle in Mujinga's work. The exhibition runs from August 30 to November 10.

Mujinga was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and grew up in Norway. She now lives in Berlin and Oslo. The artist, who also integrates video art and performance into her installations, received the National Gallery Prize in 2021. In 2024, Mujinga was nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize, a major prize for artists under the age of 35, endowed with 100,000 US dollars. In August, the presentation of all nominees opened at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev; the date of the award ceremony is yet to be announced.Art.Salon
