In the 1950s, the first artworks were created with the aid of a computer. Machines that were originally created for military purposes were »misappropriated«. It was the beginning of an artistic and social development that would have a significant impact on life in the 21st century. So-called computer art emerged as part of the media art that is now called digital art. The NFT hype is the most recent example of the art form, which until then had received comparatively little attention, although it was widespread. PCs (personal computers) hit the market in 1982 − marking a turning point that ended the first phase of digital art.
Beginning Feb. 12, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is going back to the beginning of digital art, which has rarely been the subject of an exhibition. Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952-1982 features more than 100 exhibits by 75 different artists. Visitors will learn about the connections between computer art and other new art movements such as Minimalism and Op Art. The exhibition runs from February 12 to July 2, 2023.
