The idea for Delivery Dancer (2022) was born during the coronavirus pandemic: during the lockdown, Seoul-based artist Ayoung Kim (*1979), like many other people, was dependent on delivery services. The drivers, who were among the most mobile people at the time, fascinated Kim and so she accompanied a delivery driver on her motorcycle to research her new project. In Delivery Dancer, delivery driver Ernst Mo rides her motorcycle with her doppelganger En Storm through a futuristic Seoul, from order to order. In the process, she gets lost in an algorithmic labyrinth of fictional universes that are subject to their own laws of space and time. Using AI, video, game simulations and sculptures, Kim creates speculative narratives with connections to our world: In Delivery Dancer, she draws attention to the precarious working conditions on gig economy platforms that have grown rapidly during the pandemic. Visitors can expect a complex virtual universe whose narrative they can also influence themselves. The exhibition Ayoung Kim. It is her first solo exhibition in a German museum. It is part of the European Month of Photography and was curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors of Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, and Charlotte Knaup, curator of Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
A few days ago, Kim was honored with the LG Guggenheim Award, which is endowed with 100,000 USD. The award is presented to artists for groundbreaking achievements in the field of technology-based art. The jury judged Kim to be a leading artist of our time who succeeds in showing the state of humanity beyond conventional representations and the human as an evolving intersection of bodies and data sets under the control of algorithms. She uses exciting perspectives to focus on the essential ethical and emotional questions that come with living in a technology-driven world.
Until March 30, digital collages by Chris Wehrmann can be seen in the exhibition beein-DRUCKT at the BBK Kunstforum Düsseldorf. The show, curated by Layla Reg and Kristine Tusiashvili, presents printmaking works under the theme »The world is beautiful«.
