Of stone avalanches and concrete blocks: Lucy Raven's visual journey

A huge video installation takes over the upper hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie: Lucy Raven's first chapter of Ready Mix takes a critical look at concrete production and opens our eyes to what remains hidden from the general public. The exhibition opens in Berlin on February 10.

Depicting the process of technical production: what sounds like an exercise for young film students becomes a complex statement about global trade in the work of artist Lucy Raven. The first chapter of her series Ready Mix from 2021 is a 45-minute video installation and deals with the production of the concrete that surrounds us all. The high consumption of sand and the proportion of man-made CO₂ emissions, which is around 8%, are particularly criticized. Raven spent two years filming her work in a concrete plant in Idaho. In the Neue Nationalgalerie, Raven's installation about hidden power structures has a direct current reference due to the line of sight to the »berlin modern« construction pit. The foundation stone will be laid there on the day of the exhibition opening. This will take place on February 10 and the exhibition will run until April 21.

Lucy Raven (*1977) is an American artist who also works in the media of photography, animation and performance. She achieved her breakthrough with the video China Town (2009), which follows the global production process of a copper cable. The widely exhibited second chapter of Ready Mix was released in two parts: Demolition of a Wall (Album 1) and Demolition of a Wall (Album 2), the third chapter will premiere in 2025.Art.Salon

London, Tate Britain

It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
