Minimalist art that surprises: Eveline Stauffer's striking paintings, created with simple forms, have a strong magnetic effect. The paintings look like spontaneous compositions, but they are the result of long creative processes in which the artist balances nuances of form and color with perfectionist dedication so that their full expressive power can unfold. Fascinated by the infinite combination possibilities, Stauffer explores the potential of a form serially by approaching it in different colors. Stauffer's works of art have already inspired a number of international collectors.

Stauffer's paintings are often inspired by natural forms. They are created in the artist's studio, which is located in the former ticket hall of Hindelbank railroad station near Bern. Stauffer produces limited edition signed fine art prints of some of her paintings. An edition of Light blue light in the south was recently published. To mark the occasion, we spoke to the artist, who is taking part in the Art.Salon artist program, about her work and the new fine art print:

Ms. Stauffer, your highly reduced works of art have a high recognition value. How did you find your own formal language?

I am often asked this question and it is not easy to answer. Today I think the most important thing was always to listen to my inner voice. Regardless of where you are in your artistic development, because it is constantly changing. If you listen to your inner voice, you find out better what belongs to you and what does not. And at some point, you develop more and more of your unique style and learn to trust it.

I find it exciting that as children we have access to our own handwriting, our own unmistakable formal language, but that we somehow lose it when we become adults.

Many of your works are part of a series. How did the series, which includes Light blue light in the south, develop?

I started the Light series several years ago, in 2011. Like probably most people, I am always fascinated by how sunlight can affect you in the evening. It has an incredible attraction for me. The softness and tranquility that spreads across a landscape or city as the sun approaches the evening. At some point, it seemed to me that the light is always changing; from place to place. From the south to the north. And I wanted to create an abstraction for this phenomenon. A simple formal language, so to speak, for the ever-changing evening sunlight. In all its different color nuances.

That's how series work for me. I have a theme to which I want to give my own formal language. The creation of this form often takes many months, sometimes the series even develops over years, like Light, which also includes the fine art print Light blue light in the south. So that I can experience the forms myself even more intensively, I like to repeat them in multiple versions in different colors. So there are series that consist of over 30 pictures, others are available in two or three copies.

How did the work Light blue light in the south in particular come about? Was it an early work in the series?

As already mentioned, Light blue light in the south is part of the Light series. It was one of the earlier works in the series. The original work was created in 2015. A beautiful place in the north of Italy gave me the inspiration for this painting. It was there that the evening sunlight turned out in these colors.

What factors generally influence your selection process when you are planning a new print edition?

It varies in each case, there are different reasons.

On the one hand, the print should fit into my fine art print series. I have my own »formula«, which is difficult to explain. Or because I have already sold the original picture and miss looking at it myself. So at least I still have a »copy«. Or (as in the case of Light blue light in the south): there were several people interested in the original painting. And since I can only sell one original, the print makes sense.

How did this process work for Light blue light in the south?

Before the original work went to its owner, it was professionally photographed. It is then processed by the printer so that it can be printed using a special high-resolution printer. The printing process is called Giclée Fine Art Print. The prints are printed on the same paper as the original work, in my case on 330 gm Hahnemühle paper.

First, test prints are made so that the print can be matched to the colors of the original work. Even with professional studio photography of the picture, there are small color deviations. This often turns out to be the biggest challenge of the whole process. Sometimes it takes several test prints before the colors are absolutely identical to the original image. And a very good printer who understands his machine and can also make minor color changes on the machine. I've been working with the same print shop for a long time now, which makes the whole process easier because everyone is familiar with the whole process by now.

Once the pictures are printed, they are signed and dated in my studio and then stored flat in acid-free paper. If one is sold, it is placed in a cardboard roll and prepared for dispatch. The editions are always limited to 30 or 50 pieces. Once all the pictures in an edition have been sold, there will be no more.

Thank you very much for the interview.
