Ravensburg, Kunstmuseum – two solo exhibitions and an award ceremony

Max Ernst's Zwischenwelten meet Caroline Achaintre's Creatures

The opening of two solo exhibitions and a curator's award ceremony are on the agenda of the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg this evening: the exhibition Zwischenwelten on the 1st floor provides an overview of Max Ernst's somnambulistic worlds as well as his sculptural work, while Caroline Achaintre's tapestries, ceramics and watercolours on the 2nd floor under the title Shiftings enchant with figures ranging from mask-like to animalistic. The vernissage will be rounded off with the presentation of the Justus Bier Prize for Curators 2020.

Caroline Achaintre

The Kunstmuseum Ravensburg combines two solo exhibitions with an art award ceremony for curators. Max Ernst (1891-1976), one of the most important figures of Surrealism, and Caroline Achaintre (*1969), a contemporary German-French artist, will share the exhibition house from tonight (19.11.2021). Their lowest common denominator is probably their penchant for depicting creatures.

While the Kunstmuseum focuses on Ernst's creative phase from the 1920s to the 1950s and his sculptures with Zwischenwelten on the first floor, visitors to the second floor will gain an insight into Achaintre's traditional and at the same time modern techniques of tapestry and ceramics under the title Shiftings. Her »hybrid creatures«, which stare back at you from the large-format tapestries, brim with ambiguity, irritating and enchanting at the same time. Achaintre's talent lies in constantly crossing the threshold between abstraction and figuration. The visit to the Ravensburg Art Museum is rounded off with 50 works by Max Ernst that trace his path from Expressionism to his impressive late work. These exhibits are primarily on loan from the Kunstmuseum Bonn, first and foremost from the Wilfried and Gisela Fitting Collection. Those who wish to view Max Ernst's somnambulistic worlds and Achaintre's »geometric, mask-like formations« as well as »wondrous, seemingly animalistic figures« have until 20 February 2022 to do so.

The highlight of tonight's opening evening will also be the awarding of the Justus Bier Prize for Curators 2020 - it goes to Ute Stuffer and Axel Heil for the exhibition Mondjäger: Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg in Dialogue with Asger Jorn at the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg (19.10.2019 - 16.02.2020).Art.Salon
