How do you breathe new life into an exhibition on art history? By encouraging new comparisons, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art is now trying to do. From 20 November, over 700 works of art will be on view in the permanent exhibition Look Again: European Paintings 1300-1800. In addition to paintings, which are the focus, a number of sculptures and decorative art objects are also on display.
Arranged chronologically, the exhibition leads from Jan van Eyck through El Greco, Caravaggio and Poussin before ending with Goya. The museum promises a re-evaluation and inclusion of female artists and new insights into representations of religion, gender and racial discrimination.
