Hamburger Kunsthalle shows »Breathing«

In and out

Few things seem so self-evident and at the same time indispensable: the majority of people is rarely aware of breathing in and out . An impending shortness of breath, on the other hand, overrides everything bearable. With BREATHING, the Kunsthalle Hamburg explores the artistic facets of this automated process. The audience experiences breathing as a political issue, threat and elixir of life.

Life begins with the first breath and ends with the last. It is the elixir of life that often appears to us as self-understanding in everyday life. Only when the breathing mechanism is impeded, its meaning suddenly imposes itself. Breathing - a process to which the Hamburger Kunsthalle turns its attention from September 30. After FAIL BETTER (2013), WAITING(2017) and MOURNING (2020), it adds BREATHING to its series of exhibitions. In keeping with the exhibition series, she illuminates the process in it from a socially relevant as well as artistic perspective. The show will be on view from September 30.

The exhibition house recalls both how art understood breathing as divine inspiration and its the recent importance. The pandemic is creating awareness of aerosols in the air, making the automated process a danger, while George Floyd's last words »I can't breathe« have become synonymous with racist and institutional violence in 2020.

From these political points of view, the Kunsthalle presents 100 works by some 45 artistic positions from 18 countries. Painting, sculpture, installation, photography, drawing, performance, video, film, and sound pieces invite visitors through January 15, 2023, to experience an artistic approach to breathing from the Renaissance to the present. One highlight of the show: the unusually large exhibition space. According to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, it extends over several parts of the building and attracts the public with a unique light installation in the outdoor area. Art.Salon

Till Schermer

Is our personality just an illusion? Till Schermer's paintings open up a new perspective on the fragmented human psyche. In intense, sometimes disturbing images, the artist presents the protagonists of our mental society - perhaps the start of an adventure for one's own mind.
