Los Angeles, LACMA: Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond

From Women About Women

The global North has fixed stereotypes in its head about the images of women that circulate in Islamic cultures. The Los Angeles Museum of Art is determined to dispel these stereotypes: Starting April 23, it will let women from those societies exclusively define their own image of their fellow females. As of then, it's time to say: Women Defining Women!

»All the works in Women Defining Women are by women artists, and all depicting images of women. Each, through her unique vision, is fashioning not only her own definition of self but is helping to redefine and empower women everywhere,« says curator and department head Linda Komaroff, summarizing the new special exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA). Beginning April 23, her department, Art of the Middle East, will present images of women from Islamic-influenced societies. Political developments and often rapid social changes are reflected in the approximately 75 works by the 42 women artists. The pieces in the group exhibition Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond have roots from Africa to West, Central and South Asia.

Most of the exhibits are from LACMA's own collection, while some are new acquisitions that LACMA is showing for the very first time. One work Rania Matar commissioned especially for the exhibition depicts the actress Iman Vellani. She portrays Kamala Khan in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Until September 24, those interested can view the exhibition of women about women.Art.Salon

Dive deeper into the art world

Till Schermer

Is our personality just an illusion? Till Schermer's paintings open up a new perspective on the fragmented human psyche. In intense, sometimes disturbing images, the artist presents the protagonists of our mental society - perhaps the start of an adventure for one's own mind.
