Frans Masereel (1889-1972) was a graphic artist, draftsman, painter and founding member of the internationalen Holzschneidervereinigung XYLON (international woodcutting association). With his modern linoleum and woodcuts, in his last years he had a decisive influence on the association, which had provided impetus since the 1950s. The prints, predominantly in black, form the basis for the comprehensive retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen, which bears the programmatic title Es gibt keine schönere Farbe als das Schwarz (There is no color more beautiful than black). Starting on December 16, the Museum im Spendhaus will present an overview of Frans Masereel's life's work with more than 200 exhibits. The occasion is the anniversary of the Belgian artist's death, which will be celebrated for the 50th time on January 3. In addition to his well-known prints, the show also presents paintings, watercolors, drawings and handicrafts from the period between 1911 and 1971.
The Kunstmuseum Reutlingen already has its own large collection of Masereel's woodcuts and books, from which the exhibition is mainly drawn. It is supplemented by private loans that comprise the missing groups of works. Frans Masereel. Es gibt keine schönere Farbe als das Schwarz runs until April 10, 2022.
