Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael are familiar even to non-art connoisseurs. Donatello also deserves a place in this series, as the new exhibition Donatello. Inventor of the Renaissance at the Berlin Gemäldegalerie proves this. The Italian sculptor lived from around 1386 to 1466 and displayed an extraordinary productivity, love of experimentation and imagination that was to shape subsequent generations of the Renaissance. Around 90 exhibits, including numerous major works by Donatello, will be on display in Berlin from 2 September 2022 to 8 January 2023.
Donatello's sculptures and reliefs are integrated into a historical context that explains his outstanding achievement and development as a sculptor. Donatello's story is representative of the beginning of the Renaissance. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the Musei del Bargello (both in Florence) and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which is presenting the show after the Picture Gallery.
