Great artists such as Pablo Picasso have enjoyed using it, continuing a long, worldwide tradition: clay has been the basis of many works of art for millennia. Although the material has never been able to match oil paints or marble in terms of prestige, artists still appreciate its creative diversity today. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is exhibiting historical and contemporary clay works in Conversing in Clay: Ceramics from the LACMA Collection. It features works from several centuries and from all parts of the world. From 7 August 2022 to 21 May 2023, the museum will transport visitors to a fascinating part of human art and cultural history.
Highlights of the exhibition include Nicholas Galanin's installation I Dreamt I Could Fly (2013), consisting of 60 porcelain arrows that appear to fly, and Steven Young Lee's Jar with Tiger and Clouds (2019). The work is inspired by traditional Korean bowls from the 18th century, in which the artist replaces the typical dragon figure with the advertising figure Tony the Tiger from his childhood.
